“They set out to sell 50 units to friends and family — and sold around 32,000.”
Born from a Cambridge tape society
Founded in 1976 as A&R Cambridge Ltd by John Dawson, an engineering student and active member of Cambridge University's Tape Recording Society, together with fellow student Chris Evans — "A&R" standing for Amplification & Recording.
The A60 that started it all
Their first product, the A60 integrated amplifier, became a classic — admired for its restrained, sleek appearance and high-end sound. It remains the main ancestor of most modern Arcam products, and founder John Dawson still visits the offices weekly.
AV pioneers, not just two-channel
In 1995, Arcam built the Xeta 1 — what it calls the world's first audiophile AV amplifier — followed by the first DAB tuner in 1999, Class G amplification in 2015, and Dirac Live room correction, well ahead of the industry.
